Memes Explain Alia Bhatt’s Role in Brahmastra

The recently released Bollywood film Brahmastra has enjoyed enormous success at the box office. The Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor starrer crossed 100 Crore INR at the opening weekend. The superhero film also received flashy reviews from critics, but viewers seemed divided on many aspects. Brahmastra, directed by Ayan Mukerji, also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, and Mouni Roy. It also featured Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in cameo roles. While many appreciated the spectacular cast, some felt their roles were not as impactful as Ranbir Kapoor’s main character. Same with Alia Bhatt’s role in Brahmastra, which viewers found limited to being only the love interest for Ranbir’s Shiva. They shared memes on social media to make fun of the film, especially Alia Bhatt’s character.

The Importance of Alia Bhatt’s Role in Brahmastra

Alia Bhatt played the role of Isha in the film, a girl who stoked the superpower inside Shiva. Social media users pointed out that a remarkable portion of Isha’s dialogue included her lover’s name, “Shiva”. They joked that she had the easiest job on the set by just shouting “Shiva” every 5 minutes. Some said that they were so bored due to the overused plot of the film, so they just counted the times Alia said “Shiva”. It made it feel like Ranbir was dominating the film all over while other artists were just there to support him. Alia Bhatt gave 2 back to back-hit movies, Gangubai Kathiawadi and Darlings, in 2022, so she was expected to do more than just remind everyone what Ranbir’s character’s name was. Even this article has used “Shiva” fewer times than Alia Bhatt.

Something that Ruins the Fun

A minimized role in amplifying the main character was not impressive for Bollywood fans. Alia Bhatt is considered one of the biggest actresses in the Indian film industry right now, so many believed she deserved a better character. Here is another meme comparing Alia Bhatt’s role in Brahmastra to Elaichi (cardamom) in Biryani which is a metaphor non-essential item. Just like a tiny Elaichi ruins the entire Biryani’s taste for many, Alia’s role was also minuscule and not enjoyable for some.

Not Enough Action

There are many fan theories about Alia Bhatt’s role in Brahmastra. Some like to hope that it is only Part 1, so her role may get better in the next instalments in the planned trilogy. As it is an action movie, the audience would also like to see Alia engage in some fight scenes like her male counterpart. Hollywood superhero movies always portray women as fighters, such as Wonder Woman in Justice League and Black Widow in Avengers. They fight alongside and against male characters, and the fans adore them. Maybe if Bollywood had tried that, it would not have rendered Alia’s role this useless. The film did try to put Isha in one action sequence against the antagonist, played by Mouni Roy. However, the scene looked funny, like the collision between Shadab Khan and Asif Ali during the Asia Cup 2022 final.
