Arshad Nadeem and Neeraj Chopra Reach Olympics Javelin Throw Final

Talented athletes from India and Pakistan have made it into the final match of Javelin Throw in the Olympics 2020. Both topped their respective qualifying groups in hopes of making history at the Olympics. Neeraj Chopra passed the qualifying round of Group A with a massive 86.65m throw that raised hopes for India in winning their first-ever Olympic medal in track and field. Arshad Nadeem on the other hand booked his place in the finals after making an impressive 85.16m throw. The goal for each athlete was to throw the javelin at least 83.50m far in order to advance.

The 24-year-old Pakistani is among the 12 javelin throwers competing for the gold, silver, or bronze medal on 7th August 2021. Arshad and his friend/opponent Neeraj made the qualifying round on 4th August a South Asian-dominated event. Arshad is the only representation for Pakistan remaining in the Olympics. Pakistani fans of the games are hoping that he would be the one to end a 29-year-old Olympic medal drought in Pakistan.

The last time Pakistan won a medal was in the 1992 Barcelona games.

Who is Arshad Nadeem?

Arshad Nadeem is a professional javelin thrower who has been representing Pakistan since 2016 in South Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Championships, and World Championships. In 2019, he made a new highest record at the South Asian Games by throwing a distance of 86.29m. It got him qualified for Tokyo Olympics 2020.

He belongs to the small city of Mian Channu in Khanewal district of Punjab, Pakistan. He was a versatile sportsman since childhood and had also played other sports on a domestic level like cricket, badminton, football, athletics, shot-put, and discus throw. Soon he specialized in javelin throw by winning several gold medals in Punjab Youth Festivals.

On the international level, he has 4 Bronze and 1 Gold which he won in the 2019 South Asian Games.

Pakistan Sends Wishes and Prayers

Nadeem has been in the same competition with Neeraj in the 2018 Asian Games. The Indian athlete finished 1st, 2nd position went to China’s Liu Qizhen, and Nadeem came at third place. The Government of Pakistan applauded the efforts of Arshad Nadeem and claimed that it was proud of him.

Social media users rejoiced the moment and kept on replaying the memorable throw by a Pakistani athlete. All eyes are on him as he faces the same opponent from 3 years ago.

Ex-captain of Pakistan’s cricket team Wasim Akram said that most successful Olympians hailed from smaller cities of Pakistan like Mian Chunnu and Gujranwala. He also mentioned weightlifter Taha Talib who recently finished 5th in the weightlifting category. He was just 2kg shy of winning a bronze medal. Akram boasted that without enough resources and proper governance, Pakistan is still able to produce impressive talent.

Other Players in the Finals

Athletes joining Arshad Nadeem and Neeraj Chopra in the finals are from Moldova’s Andrian Mardare, Sweden’s Kim Amb, Czech Republic’s Vitezslav Vesely and Jakub Vadlejch, Finland’s Lassi Etelatalo, Belarus’s Pavel Mialeshka, and Aliaksei Katkavets, Romania’s Mihaita Alexandru Novac, and Germany’s Julian Webber and Johannes Vetter.
