BAFTA 2022 Host Mocks Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

The 75th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) were held at Royal Albert Hall in London on 13 March. As likely, several celebrities who attended BAFTA 2022 Awards ceremony showed solidarity with Ukraine either by wearing the badge or the dresses in the colours of the country’s flags. The highlight of the ceremony was The Power of the Dog winning the best film and best director award beating the much hyped-up Dune. The Welsh singer Shirley Bassey performed Diamonds are forever to mark the 60 years of the James Bond franchise leaving the audience in awe of her charismatic personality.

Meghan Harry Joke at BAFTA 2022

The Australian actor Rebel Wilson hosted the BAFTA 2022 and took a jibe at some celebrities, characters and Russian President Vladimir Putin through her one-liners and gestures. The host even mocked Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s viral interview with Oprah Winfrey by saying that it had everything from drama to fantasy, however, it didn’t win any awards. These remarks probably mean that Meghan’s revelation about the Royal family’s treatment of her could be mere fabrication.

Wilson also mocked the James Bond franchise by saying that James Bond was turning 60 and his girlfriends were turning 25. Wilson also took a dig at Harry Potter writer J.K Rowling by calling Emma Watson a witch and talking about her weight loss.

Showing Middle Finger to Putin

Showing solidarity with Ukraine and condemning Putin for his act by participants was a major highlight of BAFTA 2022. Krishnendu Majumdar, the chair of BAFTA remarked in the opening address that he hoped for peace to return in Ukraine. He said, “our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine as well as those affected by other conflicts around the world.”

However, the host Rebel Wilson showed the middle finger to the Russian President by saying “And this is the gesture to Putin”.

First Deaf Actor Winning BAFTA

Troy Kotsur won the best supporting actor award in CODA (Child of Deaf Adults). He became the first-ever deaf actor to win a BAFTA. Kotsur who played the role of Frank Rossi in CODA even gave a winning speech in sign language. While talking about the 60 years of James Bond franchise he joked that there should be a deaf James Bond as well. Ariana Debose won the award for the best-supporting actress.

Some Big Wins at BAFTA

The big winner at BAFTA 2022 was The Power of the Dog which has bagged 12 nominations at Oscars. Jane Campion won the best director award for The Power of the Dog that was accepted by Benedict Cumberbatch who was nominated in the best actor category but didn’t win.
