Best Memes on Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover

Elon Musk has finally purchased Twitter for 44 billion USD after a 6-month saga. Initially, the social media giant was reluctant to agree Musk’s terms and even sued him for saying he would cancel the deal over the number of spam accounts. His unusual interest in the platform also sparked a lengthy debate regarding online free speech. Critics have raised concerns that the billionaire’s takeover could further promote hate speech and misinformation. However, right-wing elements have praised this deal as a corrective measure for Twitter’s tendency to censor certain political views.

The Tesla CEO has criticized Twitter for deleting controversial posts and accounts, saying that it contradicts free speech. He once said that if he ever bought Twitter, he would bring back Donald Trump’s account. The former US President was removed from the platform for allegedly using it to incite violence at the US Capitol riots in January, 2021.

As a reason for buying Twitter, he said it was important for “future civilizations” to have a common “town square” where they can debate wide range of beliefs in a healthy manner, without restoring to violence. He even criticized Twitter’s dependence on advertising, warning significant job layoffs in case of taking over. Eventually it was the first thing he did after moving in. Musk fired CEO Parag Agrawal, Head of Legal, Policy, and Trust Vijaya Gadde, and Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal.

The users of the platform he just acquired have also responded to Musk’s takeover with memes.

Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover Feels Like a Villain’s Victory

Musk buying Twitter has not gone well with the leftists and liberals. To them, the situation is similar to the mass annihilation depicted in Hollywood movie Avengers: Infinity War (2018). The villain gets an upper hand over the heroes and succeeds in wiping out most of them along with half of the human race. Elon Musk has a accused the platform for being predominantly left-biased. However, now it is expected that far-right views will again run rampant on the social media. One of the employees Musk fired, Vijaya Gadde, was praised for leading the operation which kicked Donald Trump out of Twitter. So, Musk became an instant antagonist for firing her while planning to bring back the former far-right president.

Donald Trump’s Reception on Twitter

Rights activists have already shared several concerns regarding the new rules under Musk. They fear that there’s going be to less content moderation for the sake of “freedom of speech”. Reinstating Trump’s account could generate highly polarizing reaction and may result in the opposite of what Musk wants to do.

Personal Reasons

Ever since Musk has announced his plan to buy and transform Twitter, critics have doubted his reasons. Not everyone could trust if this deal was for the betterment of humanity or free speech. Musk is a human conglomerate, incharge of multiple companies including Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, Neuralink, Open AI, and now Twitter. Commentators have also ruled out profit as his main motive as Musk is the world’s richest person already. They only saw the move as a waste of money instead of something necessary.

All Hell Breaks Loose

Following the news of Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover, some Twitter accounts decided to test how “free” was the platform. They assumed that new owner would start working on fresh rules on the first day and went ahead with sharing racist, misogynistic, and bigoted comments on the platform. It is also not clear if Twitter would at least remove such non-sensical posts under Musk or consider them “freedom of speech” too.

Musk vs Bots

Musk is also heavily trolled for his ambition to remove bots from Twitter. Due to this, he even retracted his offer which lead him to face a lawsuit. The Tesla CEO has still not confirmed if he has bought the platform after the removal of bot accounts. On the other hand, according to Twitter, the team removes 1 million bot and spam accounts on daily basis. However, they keep on regenerating to fulfil their purpose on Twitter. In that light, it might be impossible to entirely get rid of bots and now Musk would have to deal with them regularly.
