Facebook to Help Stop Blasphemous Content

The interior ministry has announced that a Facebook delegation will soon visit Pakistan to stop blasphemous content.

Facebook Designated Person to Stop Blasphemous Content

To work with the Government of Pakistan, Facebook has nominated a person who will work in close collaboration with Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to overcome the problem.

Chaudhry Nisar, while speaking at a ceremony, reiterated the government’s commitment to take strict action against blasphemers. He said that the government was working to stop blasphemous content getting published on the social media. Chaudhry Nisar also revealed that PTA had already blocked most of such websites.

Collaboration Requested with Facebook and US Administration

Interior Minister said that the government was working with Facebook Administration and the United States Administration to overcome the problem via the US Embassy in Pakistan.

Chaudhry Nisar also said that Facebook Administration was asked to help the Government of Pakistan traces the criminals responsible for uploading blasphemous content on the social media.

Here is what Chaudhry Nisar had to say about the social media sites and blasphemous content in Pakistan.

“Social media sites should cooperate to prevent uploading of any blasphemous content. Ridiculing a religion in the name of freedom of expression should not be allowed. Concerned authorities are also in contact with Interpol to interrogate some people abroad.”

The Minister said that a Senior Officer at Embassy of Pakistan in the US is given the responsibility to get required information from Facebook.

The Government is contemplating a permanent fix to blocking of social media content in Pakistan, as the Minister revealed.

“The government will take a final decision on the functioning of social networking sites, including Facebook, Twitter, etc., in Pakistan within the next three to four days. We will take strict steps if their administration responds in the negative without taking into account any criticism. I want to make to clear on behalf of the government that we would also go to any extent to take action against those who committed blasphemy on social media.”
