Oscar-winning illustrator and cartoon series Tom and Jerry director Gene Deitch has died in his apartment in Prague at the age of 95.
According to media reports the death of animator Gene Deitch has been confirmed by his Czech publisher Petr Himmel, who stated that Deitch died unexpectedly during the night from Thursday to Friday in his apartment in Pargue.
Gene Deitch whose full name was Eugene Merrill Deitch was born on August 8 in 1924 in Chicago. arrived in Prague in 1959 and stayed in the Czechoslovakian capital. He directed 13 episodes of Tom and Jerry.
He was known for directing some of the most popular animations including Popeye the Sailor Man, Munro, Tom Terrific and Nudnik.
He was nominated for an Academy Award in 1958 for Tom Terrific series and also won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1960 for his film Munro. Gene Deitch received the Winsor McCay Award for his lifelong contribution to animation in 2004.
