Global Slavery Index- Which Country Has Most Number of Slaves

A shocking survey by the Global Slavery Index has revealed that more than 40 million of the world’s population is still living as slaves. Most of the people who are suffering from this modern day slavery live in North Korea and, African countries.

Shocking Stats According to the Global Slavery Index

According to the report most of the victims of modern slaves live in Asia, as North Korea is the country with the highest number of slaves. The communist nation has 104 in every 1000 people like slaves with total victims reaching up to 26m. Other states with a higher number of slave victims and lowest action from the government are Libya, Eritrea, Central African Republic Iran, Equatorial Guinea, Burundi, Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Mauritania.

Sectors with More Number of Slaves

Report by Global Slavery Index reveals that almost 20.4m slaves are in forced labor and 15.4m are in forced marriage. Shockingly more than 70% of these modern day slaves are females.

The report reveals that modern-day slavery is prevalent in the world in the form of human trafficking, forced labor, slavery and slavery-like practices, debt bondage, forced servile marriage and child labor. It is pertinent to mention that bonded labor which is one of the worst form of slavery is still practiced in the world in various ways.

Slavery in the Developed States

According to the Global Slavery Index, even the developed countries like the United States and the United Kingdom also have such victims. In the United States, there are almost 400,000, and in the United Kingdom, there are almost more than 1,36000 modern slaves. On the brighter side, the developed countries like the Netherlands, United States, United Kingdom, Sweden, Belgium, Croatia, Spain, Norway, Portugal, and Montenegro have the highest action rate against slavery.

Slavery in the Arab States

Apart from South Asian, South East Asian and African countries Arab countries are also affected by the epidemic of modern day slavery. The 11 state region that includes Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Lebonan, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Yemen and Kuwait have almost 520,000 victims of slavery. Among these, nearly 67% are in forced labor while 33% are in forced marriage. Further the countries like Syria, Iraq, and Yemen which are like conflict zones, account for the highest number of slave victims.

What is Modern Slavery

Global Survey Index has used the modern slavery as an umbrella term to cover forced labor, bonded debt, human trafficking and slavery-like practices. The term refers to a situation where people are subjected to exploitation using threats, violence and other abuse of power.
