Hong Kong Extradition Bill is Dead, But Protests Still Continue

Protests in Hong Kong continue despite assurance from Carrie Lam that extradition bill proposing handing over people to China mainland is dead. Masses in Hong Kong are not satisfied with the government’s shady claims and hence they are carrying on.

Hong Kong Extradition Is Being Met With Growing Resistance

Ever since the Hong Kong government announced that it intends to pass an extradition bill which allows other governments to prosecute citizens of Hong Kong, mass protests have erupted throughout the city; these have brought the trade and commerce activities in the city to a standstill leaving it in chaos.

Despite shutting the buses and trains the number of protesters is still increasing, which is worrisome for the police. If the bill would have been passed many human rights activists who had been on China’s hit list for years would have been in danger for being the first one to extradited to the mainland where they would have met a horrible demise.

What Are Protesters Demanding?

Bonnie Leung of the Civil Human Rights Front, the organization responsible for organizing this demonstration reportedly stated that they will not stop protesting until their five demands were met and detainees were released.

Carrie Lam after facing harsh criticism and fierce resistance repeatedly assured her fellow citizens that the bill will not go through. She appeared in a press conference reiterating that there was no need for the people to show distrust in the government because the Hong Kong extradition bill was effectively dead.

Is Carrie Lam Lying to Protestors?

Despite her verbal assurance, many still feel the bill is not dead until it is completely removed or withdrawn from the legislative and the reviewing process. According to experts, this is just a delay tactic. Lam is just waiting for the situation to dial down before she can make one last attempt to reinitiate the passing of the bill right underneath the noses of the people.
