Over the last decade, one of the biggest problems that have arisen in border security is the extensive use of underground tunnels that miscreants often use for illegal purposes. Authorities have taken different steps to destroy those tunnels. According to media reports, Just a few years back multiple tunnels were spotted by the authorities along the US-Mexican border that stretched for miles with their heads in Mexico and their ends somewhere safe in the US.
How These Tunnels Cause Trouble

1. Used To Smuggle Contraband
Several reports have shown how these underground tunnels facilitate the smuggling of contraband. Some of the most well-known and well-funded crime organization or syndicate’s or gangs like the Latin kings and MS-13 have been known to build underground passages to smuggle goods from Mexico to the United States and vice versa.
2. Used For Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is another heinous crime that these tunnels facilitate. According to estimates the cartels have managed to make up to 500 million US dollars collectively in a year. Apart from being a route of human trafficking tunnels also help those smugglers, wrongdoers and their allies to safely escape the justice. The famous Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman who is wanted by both the US and Mexican authorities for multiple crimes including human trafficking managed to escape not once but twice through such a tunnel. Though authorities have taken steps to stop such illegal activities.
3. Used for Allowing Unchecked Entry to People Affected
It is a well-known fact that the health conditions in all the countries are not the same. So, legal travelers and migrants have to undergo a medical check-to to ensure that they are not suffering from an epidemic disease. We know about viruses like Ebola that have claimed hundreds of lives in Africa and how they are capable of spreading to other regions through carriers; it implies that travelers can be a mean of spreading a certain kind of viral disease specific to country of their origin.
The US and Mexican authorities have stepped up their efforts to find and destroy such tunnels, before they pave way for migration of the affected people. In one of the raids conducted by the American authorities, they had found bioagents that an alleged terrorist organization was reportedly trying to smuggle into the States to cause chaos and unrest and kill millions.
