The Most Dangerous Food Items from Around the World

Food is typically considered a substance safe for consumption. Certain food items that natural grow are dangerous to consume and have been placed on the list of dangerous foods banned for sale.

Dangerous Food From the Sea

Fugu fish

This fish is considered a delicacy in Japan and is known to kill at least 50 people each year.

The fish has a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin which can paralyze or asphyxiate a person if not prepared properly. The toxin is found in high concentration in the internal organs especially in the liver.

The Japanese government has strict laws governing the preparation and serving of Fugu in restaurants.  A chef must have a special license which is awarded only to those who pass the government’s 3-year training program

Hakral

It’s an Icelandic delicacy made from the meat of the green shark. It is considered a dangerous food because of the high concentration of uric acid and trimethylamine oxide.  If consumed unprocessed or improperly processed you can die. People not used eating hakral have a hard time eating it as the meat smells of ammonia, but on the bright side, it has a very long shelf life.

Sanakji

Sanakij is the wiggling tentacles of a baby octopus eaten in Korea. The tentacles are cut t while the octopus is still alive. The tentacles have a brain nerve that signals the muscles to keep on moving. It is one of the most dangerous food items as the suckers on the tentacles are still active and can grab the inside of a human throat causing suffocation.

Dangerous Food Items from the Land

Many natural food items can help prevent chronic diseases like cancer. But they are also eatables like some herbs and roots that can be death taking if eaten in unprocessed form.

Casava

Cassava is tree root that grows in parts of Africa and South America. It Is extremely drought resistant and proves a good resource of carbohydrates. It has compounds called anti-nutrients which prevent the absorption of nutrients into the body. Furthermore, raw cassava has Cyanogenic glycosides which hydrolysis to cyanide upon chewing or crushing and can kill or paralyze a person.

Fruit Bat

Believe it or not, some people love eating bats. The fruit bat found in  Guam loves to eat the fruit of the cycad tree which have a neurotoxin called beta-Methylamino-L-alaries like nine.this toxin causes Lytico-bodig disease. This disease has claimed the lives of many in Guam and so is among the most dangerous food in the world.
