New Features In iOS 14 Will Change The Way People Use iPhone

Apple announced its next big iPhone software update iOS 14 on 22nd June at the annual WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference). Apparently, it will feature the long-overdue changes that will also change the way users operate the iPhone. Reportedly, it will come up with the new iPhone 12 but the developer beta version is out for testing.

Unfortunately, only developers will be able to use this beta version. The public beta version will be available sometime in July. Meanwhile, here is the list of all features that ranges from interface changes, updated Siri, and additional functionalities of messaging apps.

Changes in Home Screen due ti iOS 14

The current iOS home screen has generated historic criticism due to its bland and annoying user experience. Since many previous updates, Apple failed to act on the feedback but this time the smartphone giant has apparently revolutionized the home screen.

This feature has been named App Library which is Apple’s take on Android’s app drawer. Apps will be grouped automatically based on their categories. App Library seems more compatible with the design of upcoming flagship iPhone 12 rather than the old lifeless app tile home screen.

More To Do With Widgets

Unlike the previous version, Apple has allowed users to take widgets out of their space and add them anywhere on the home screen beside the apps. Before this, widgets were only available at the bottom of the Today View.

These widgets can be resized to take up desirable space and with each resize, there will be dynamic changes to the displayed information.

As an extension of widgets, iOS 14 also includes Smart Stacks which can include the user’s daily preference widgets like Calendar, Weather, Or Measurement Tools.

Messages Finally Get An Update

Messages app has mostly remained untouched whenever an update was added to iPhone. However with iOS 14, it is finally going to include some added functionality. Messages screen will now provide a space at the top for pinning frequently used contacts.

Another major Messages upgrade allows users to respond to a specific message in group conversations like the workplace apps, for example, Slack. Now notifications can also be turned off in a particular group conversation unless pinging a specific member of the group.

New Memojis are also added with new features such as hairstyles and accessories (Of Course face mask as well)

Maps and Navigation

Apple has added Guides in the Maps that will provide recommended places to explore or eat around the cities.

The tech giant has also decided to go green by minimizing the carbon footprint of its user. It is done by providing cycling-specific directions that alert about bike lanes. Maps will inform about the elevation, busy roads, and quiet ones. Users will get an idea if there are any steep hills on their path.

Maps will also get an EV routing feature for users who own the new electric cars. This feature will track the vehicle’s charge level and suggest a suitable route where it can find a charging station.

App Clips in iOS 14

App Clips are newly added bite-sized snippets of apps that will allow the users to preview an app without downloading. This feature can be useful in instances where a user only wants to use an app for the short-term, but not necessarily needs to keep it in the device. For example, if a user wants to pay for parking, he would prefer to quickly swipe the card in the meter rather than downloading an entire parking app.

Picture-in-Picture Video Feature

This feature allows the user to watch a video while performing other tasks on iOS 14. Videos will remain in a tabbed view which can be aligned backward or forward to the current display. Videos can also be resized just like widgets, which allows maximum view of the display where another task can be performed simultaneously.

New Improvements To Siri

Besides expanding knowledge, Siri will have a compact design in iOS 14 rather than a separate screen like in previous versions. It will be able to display information directly from the home screen if just told to do so.

It will also be able to send audio messages and perform an on-device dictation whenever typing anywhere. Apple also boosted the translation capabilities of Siri in this update.

Translation Enhanced

iOS 14 will improve the translate app that will translate entire conversations after automatically detecting the language. Moreover, Apple claims that a user won’t have to connect to the internet to use this feature. Additionally, Safari will have a translation feature for the first time.

It will support translation in 11 languages i.e Mandarin Chinese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Korean, Russian, and Portuguese.

iPhone As A Car Key

Digital Car Keys is a new feature that can make the iPhone unlock and start the user’s car. It will use NFC to operate but Apple has not clearly disclosed the compatible cars. Reportedly this feature is currently specific for upcoming BMW 5 Series 2021.

Apple has also said that the next generation of digital car keys will be based on Ultra Wideband technology for increasing spatial awareness. It will allow users to unlock new car models without even taking their iPhones out.

Supported Devices

Apart from the iPhone 12, iOS 14 supported devices include:
