Sexually Explicit OnlyFans Content Will No Longer Be Available

OnlyFans has announced to ban adult content on its site starting from October 1. UK-based content selling platform, known for explicit photos and videos of its members, told the media that it was planning to evolve its content guidelines. The website gained popularity during the coronavirus lockdown and became a source of income for more than 2 million content creators. Users can subscribe to the desired creators for accessing their content. It stirred debate on how these creators will earn money if clients won’t find what they subscribed for in the first place. Reportedly, OnlyFans content will still offer some value for money after the company bans explicitly.

OnlyFans Content Still Includes Nudity

The company announced that content creators will still be allowed to post nude images and videos if they were according to its Acceptable Use Policy. However, the website is still trying to finalize this policy. It failed to define what is meant by “sexually explicit” OnlyFans content but most likely it was talking about pornography.

One can understand that live sex on the camera will no longer be available. However, solo members showing off their nude bodies seemed to be allowed. The move away from pornography came after the company decided to comply with the requests of investors. It claimed to reveal more details in near future.

Why is This Change Happening Now?

Reportedly the website made this decision after pressure from its payment processors. If the site doesn’t ban the explicit content, then it may lose the ability to receive the payments. It added that it was to make the platform sustainable in the long run and more inclusive for creators and fans of all kinds.

However, many have criticized the idea and opined that OnlyFans has betrayed the sex workers who made it profitable in the first place. Despite it includes various other content creators like cooking experts, yoga instructors, and other funny video makers, the most popular content remained pornography. However, some users did like the other stuff which may be considered as explicit under the new policy.

The website received widespread recognition as one of the hubs of pornography. It is surrounded by several controversies like BBC Documentary ‘Nudes4Sale’ that reveals how underage teenagers are selling nudes online by creating fake IDs on OnlyFans. Moreover, there are many reports on the safety and security of content creators. They have been harassed and stalked by clients, and their exclusive data has been leaked online.

Investor Attraction vs Client Attraction

OnlyFans started in 2016 for content creators to receive payment from their fans directly for whatever service they render. Current OnlyFans content with pornography has generated more than 130 million users on the website. The content creators have earned more than 5 billion USD on this platform. Just last year the site generated 2 billion USD from the sales of images and videos. OnlyFans receives a 20% cut from the earnings of each creator. Now, this much revenue is likely to suffer a blow as investors are not interested in a particular kind of content being posted on the site.

Payment processing companies are increasingly trying to control the type of material pornography sites can host. Last year, Mastercard and Visa blocked payments to porn hosting websites owned by MindGeek (porn giant) According to the reports, it allowed “revenge porn” to be posted without the consent of people involved. They released the payments after MindGeek deleted tens of millions of such videos from its most popular site, PornHub.

Controversial issues are usually scary for potential investors, driving the company to establish a rather mainstream business model. The clients on the other hand have been expressing their disappointment on social media.
