Shah Mahmood Qureshi Faces Backlash For Not Holding His Umbrella

The Pakistani foreign affairs minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi became the target of the public’s wrath after an elderly person held his umbrella for him. On Tuesday, April 6, 2021, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Islamabad, Pakistan at Islamabad international airport. Qureshi received him along with some of his companions. While he was walking alongside Lavrov, an elderly person held his umbrella for him in the rain whereas the Russian representative carried his. The very action of the Pakistani minister angered many and they started bashing him on social media.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi Faces Criticism for Being an Elitist  

The vice-chairman of the Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaaf political party, Shah Mahmood Qureshi currently faced criticism for being a superior personality. His action of letting someone else hold his umbrella for him somehow offended many Pakistanis. Numerous personalities on social media are passing sarcastic comments on FM Pakistan.

Some are addressing and taunting the minister by calling an arrogant person since he has other people to do his work. Many quoted the Pakistani prime minister’s words sarcastically that “This is the new Pakistan” where the poor Pak representative can’t even hold his umbrella but a Russian FM can.

Public Demands Equality

The pictures taken at the Islamabad International in which a person was holding an umbrella for Shah Mahmood Qureshi went viral on social media. The platform users besides taunting the FM bashed PM Imran khan for letting the representatives treat people like servants. They also fixated on how everyone should be treated equally in the country and politicians should not act like superiors since they are supposed to serve the country not the other way around.

Why Russia’s Foreign Minister Visited Pak?   

Russia’s foreign affairs minister Lavrov, came to Pakistan and met Shah Mahmood Qureshi. He is the first Russian minister to visit Pak in nine years. The reason FM, Russia came to Pakistan especially when coronavirus cases in Pakistan are constantly increasing, is to strengthen the bilateral relations of the countries. Also, the significance of the visit revolves around the discussion over certain important domains including counter-terrorism, defense, economy, trade, energy, and the Afghan peace process.
