US Elections and Muslim Women to Congress

Midterm US Elections 2018 may not have proven lucky for Democrats who are still a minority in Senate, but they have given a breakthrough to women politicians and those from different ethnicities. The success of these women is indeed a breath of fresh air when far-right politicians are becoming mainstream- Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro is the recent example to name.

Apart from two Muslim women Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omer, there is another woman politician which is making waves as results of Midterm US elections come in. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez has become the youngest woman after being elected to the US Congress, only at the age of 29.

Who Are Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omer

It is to be noted that Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omer are not only Non-Muslim Americans but also have origins outside the United States. 42 years old Rashida Tlaib was born to Palestinian Immigrants. She was also the first American Muslim to get elected to Michigan’s legislature. She won elections for her support for universal health care, free housing and other social welfare agenda that Democrats are famous for. It is to be noted that Rashida who is a strong voice against President Trump also got arrested for disrupting a Trump’s speech.

Ilhan Omer is not only the first Muslim to get elected to Congress; she is also the first Somali-American to make this achievement. Omer is a loud voice against Israel’s atrocities in Palestine; she also has backing from Rashida Talib and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes.

36 years old Ilhan Omer who had also spent at least four years in a refugee camp also won elections by the liberal policies of Democrats like free college, housing and Universal Healthcare. In one of her speeches, Omer mentioned that she didn’t expect American school going kids to be worried about food just like those in refugee camps.

Who is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes

While the public is celebrating the facts that Midterm US Elections 2018 have made two Muslims to reach Congress, they are also happy for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes; 29 years old, who became the youngest politician to get elected in the US Congress. Alexandria’s struggle to make it to the Congress is indeed laudable. The young politician is an educator who also worked for non-profit institutes and also as a waitress and bartender during her struggling days.
