Canadian rapper Drake has lost his bet on Argentina despite its victory in the FIFA World Cup final. The singer placed 1 million USD on the South American nation to win against France. Argentina did win the final but Drake still lost the money because of the betting type.
Drake picked Argentina to win in a bet placed in 1×2 market. In this type, 1 is a home team, X is draw and 2 is the away team. Here a gambler bets on the result of a fixture by predicting whether the home side or away side would win or it ends in a draw. Drake selected 1 or home, which was Argentina because it reached the finals first.
The tricky part of this bet is that it only considers the outcome of a standard 90 minutes match. Argentina vs France was a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes which led to extra time. Albiceleste won 4-2 on penalties but Drake’s bet did not cover the extra 30 minutes and following penalties. Drake had to specifically bet on Argentina winning by penalties in order to make money on his investment.
The odds on Argentina were 2.75, meaning that drake would’ve won 2.75 million USD on his 1 million bet if Lionel Messi and Co. defeated France within the 90-minute frame.
Messi Beats the Drake Curse
The singer has been in limelight this year for betting on various sporting events. It has also become a widespread joke that whichever team Drake bets on ends up losing. In April, he lost 100,000 USD for picking Duke Blue Devils as a winner against the North Carolina Tar Heels in 2022 NCAA Men’s Final Four. In October, he bet on Barcelona 600,000 USD to defeat Real Madrid in El Classico but Los Blancos toppled their eternal rivals by 3-1. In November, Drake tried his luck in UFC by betting 1.5 million USD on Israel Adesanya against Alex Pereira. However, the Brazilian fighter TKO’ed Adesanya in the 5th round, keeping the Drake curse alive.
Many social media users trolled the rapper after they found out he bet on Argentina as well. Some Messi fans were worried that he would make their favourites lose with his betting curse. Luckily it didn’t happen and now fans have been bragging about Messi being the ultimate G.O.A.T who even broke the Drake curse.
Apart from jokes and memes, the rapper doesn’t always lose his bets. He took home 1.4 million USD in February after placing 1.26 million USD on Los Angeles Rams winning against Cincinnati Bengals in NFL Super Bowl.
