Some scenes from the upcoming Disney+ series, Ms Marvel, have made rounds on social media. Despite being one of the much anticipated Marvel projects, it has received a mixed response from the audience. After watching the released Ms Marvel scenes, viewers, especially Pakistanis, have highlighted how the West has again failed to portray Muslims correctly.
Ms Marvel Scenes Disorientate Viewers
Ms Marvel was advertised as a project that would provide much more limelight to the Muslim characters. White and atheist characters have dominated the big and small screen for ages. It has caused frustration among the audience, driving many to demand stories and characters from varied ethnicities and religions. The West also suffers from a long-lasting problem of portraying Muslims as antagonists in their series and films. The upcoming Disney+ show claimed to change that, but after watching Ms Marvel scenes, many wanted those same bad roles back.
Pakistani Characters Speaking Like Indians
Viewers also disliked supposed Pakistani characters speaking like Indians in the released Ms Marvel scenes. They said that the way those characters were having conversations was not common in Pakistan. Some of their words were also different from the national language of Pakistan, Urdu. Such false representation gave a terrible impression to the viewers, who would not be looking forward to watching the whole stuff.
This is such false representation of Pakistani parents. No Pakistani parent, even if Punjabi talks like this!! And what’s with the Indian English accent?

Another Project to Show Islam in Poor Light
After watching only a few of the Ms Marvel scenes, the audience realized that it was just like other western projects that portray Islam in poor light. It shows the main character Kamala Khan who has the power to extend her limbs, feeling repressed by her religion rather than embracing it with grace. It conveys that Islam holds women back, which indirectly promotes atheism. User criticized the show, which makes Muslim actor Iman Vellani an Avenger, for only using the “Brown girl superhero” narrative to attract customers.
