How many seas are there in the world?

The question to the answer of “ How many Seas ” is not easy to answer. The perspective changes with what answer one can consider right.

For example, the ancient people would say that there are seven oceans in the world. People from the ancient times would suggest seven seas in the world. The names of these seas include the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, the Black Sea, the Caspian, the Adriatic, the Mediterranean, and the Persian Gulf.

You can also divide the total number of seas in the world into continents. There are seven continents in the world. Out of these seven continents, five of them connect with oceans. If you divide seas on continents, you get Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Southern Ocean, Indian Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean.

These five oceans divide the seven continents of the world. When you see the world map with oceans, you will come to know the amount of water surrounding each continent. The world map with oceans lets you locate different continents in various parts of the world.

What is the largest ocean in the world?

The Pacific Ocean is the world’s largest. Some estimates suggest that its area is around 155 million square kilometers. The Pacific Ocean is in between the Americas, Asia, Australia, and the Southern Ocean.

The area surrounded by the Pacific Ocean stands for the entire world’s one-third size. The Pacific Ocean contains twice the amount of water to the second biggest body of water on Earth. The ocean is also world’s oldest water body. Some of the rocks in the basin of this ocean are as old as 200 million years.

Let us look at the other oceans.

The Atlantic Ocean

How many seas are there in the worldThe Atlantic Ocean has an area of around 106 million square kilometers. The ocean covers around 20 percent of the total earth’s surface area. Around 29 percent of the total ocean water belongs to the Atlantic.

The Indian Ocean

The Indian Ocean is world’s third largest with an area coverage of around 70 million square kilometers. It holds around 20 percent of the entire Earth’s water. The ocean has Asia in the North, Africa on its West, and Australia on its East.

The Southern Ocean

The Southern Ocean is also commonly referred to as the Antarctic Ocean. The other name for the Southern Ocean is the Austral Ocean. The area of the Southern Ocean keeps changing from one season to the other due to seasonal influences of the sun.

The Arctic Ocean

The Arctic Ocean is considered the world’s smallest ocean. It also has the smallest area compared to all other oceans. Most of the ocean is covered in the sea ice. The area covered in the ice varies from one season to the other.

Oceans give a more appropriate division of the Earth water in comparison to seas. Seas make it a lot harder to segment different water bodies surrounding the earth. Therefore, the easiest way to see Earth’s water distribution is not with seas but oceans.
