Horse racing fans can’t wait for the Kentucky Derby 2019 to begin. Horses from all over the States come to take part in one of the oldest sporting events in the country. This year’s derby is going to start in May.
History and events leading up to Kentucky Derby 2019
The Kentucky Derby was started by Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., grandson of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition. On a visit to England, he attended the Epson Derby in Surrey. From there he went to Paris France and met the group of racing enthusiasts who formed the French Jockey Club and regularly arranged derby’s
Upon his return to the US Merriweather organized the Louisville Jockey Club to raise money to build a track with the best racing facilities. The track became known as church down to honor and pay homage to John and Henry Churchill who happily gave their land.
The first race took place On May 17, 1875, in front of an estimated 1000 people who had traveled from all parts of the states to watch 15 three-year-old horses compete in the derby.
After the initial success, the track fell into financial problems, and in 1894 the new Louisville Jockey Club was incorporated with the top of the line racing facilities. Despite all the hard work the business floundered until 1902 when Col. Matt Winn along with a group acquired the race track. There on the race track soared to heights previously unknown.
Over time the derby’s reputation grew more and more started coming to the event. To further attract people the races were broadcasted over the radio and marketing experts were hired to help market the Darby.

For many people, not much has changed. There are the same old crazy fans who lose their minds when their horse wins. The event attracts rich from all over the country including celebs and politicians.
