Foods that May Cause Insomnia And Sleep Deprivation

Insomnia and sleep deprivation are the major gifts of the sedentary lifestyle. In the modern times, when technology has taken over our lives, sleeping in the time has become more difficult. It wouldn’t be wrong at all to generalize that checking phones to scroll down the social media newsfeeds and emails is one primary reason why people find it difficult to fall asleep as soon as they hit the bed.

But apart from addiction with gadgets food is the major factor that interferes with sleep-wake cycle. Very often people have insomnia because they don’t eat the right food. One must be conscious enough to know about the food that may cause sleeplessness as they may care about the food that speeds up metabolism.

Food that Causes Insomnia and Sleep Deprivation

Usually, these are the food rich in proteins, carbs, and sugar that induce insomnia and sleep deprivation; this doesn’t mean that when should stop taking these nutrients in raw form. In fact, most of the times it is the cooked food that harms.

Let’s have a look at foods that one should avoid for preventing insomnia.

  1. High Carb Food

Say a big no to food which is rich in carbs and sugar. For instance, avoid eating desserts, chocolate cakes, and pastries. These foods are rich in sugars like fructose and glucose etc. and can produce irregular sleeping patterns.

2. Caffeine

Needless to mention that caffeine is the perfect drink to kickstart the day. So, anything that helps you stay awake is indeed not good to take at night. That’s why  people who tend to drink coffee at night are also likely to suffer from insomnia.

3. Black Chocolate

Many people tend to eat black chocolate as a midnight snack and hence stay awake till dawn. It is because black chocolate contains caffeine in it. So, its effect is more or less similar to coffee.

4. Alcohol

Alcohol is a popular drink for the dinner. In parties and on the eve of celebratory occasions people often end up over drinking it. So, those who drink before sleeping often suffer sleep deprivation and insomnia.

5. Red Meat Recipes

Red meat and food rich in protein is another cause of sleeplessness. Those who eat recipes that have the high quality of red meat are likely to feel the disturbance in the stomach due to difficulty in digestion.

6. Spicy Food

One should also avoid eating too spicy food at night as it interferes with the digestive system and produces gas and heartburn, keeping the person awake.

Apart from food mentioned above components, one must be careful with the consumption of high fiber food like oats that can cause heartburn due to slow digestion.
